  • Total Time: 2 hours 30 minutes (including rising time)
  • Yield: 12 rolls 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Dough:
  • 1 cup whole milk (warmed to 110°F/43°C)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves
  • ½ tsp salt
  • For the Filling:
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp molasses
  • For the Maple Frosting:
  • 4 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Making the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine warmed milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy. Stir in melted butter, egg, and remaining sugar. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, spices, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–2 hours or until doubled in size.
  2. Preparing the Filling: Roll out the dough into a rectangle (about 12×16 inches). Spread softened butter evenly over the dough. Mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and molasses in a small bowl, then sprinkle the mixture over the butter. Roll the dough tightly into a log, starting from the long side. Cut into 12 equal slices using a sharp knife or dental floss.
  3. Baking the Rolls: Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, leaving space between each. Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before frosting.
  4. Making the Maple Frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla extract, beating until light and fluffy. Drizzle or spread the frosting over the warm rolls. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a vegan option, substitute butter with plant-based alternatives and use a flax egg instead of a regular egg.
  • Gluten-free option: Use gluten-free flour blends for the dough and ensure all other ingredients are certified gluten-free if needed.
  • Storage tip: Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for longer storage. Reheat gently before serving.
