  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake Layers:

  • 2 boxes white or vanilla cake mix (or homemade batter)
  • Eggs, oil, and water (as per cake mix instructions)

For the Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Food coloring gel (Hogwarts house colors: red, yellow, blue, green, and black/silver/gold)

For Decorations:

  • Fondant cutouts (lightning bolt, wand, Hogwarts crest, etc.)
  • Edible gold dust or sprinkles
  • Optional: Chocolate ganache drip

Instructions

1. Baking the Cake Layers

  1. Prepare the cake batter according to package instructions and divide it into separate bowls for different colors (if desired).
  2. Bake each cake layer separately according to package directions, then allow them to cool completely before assembling.

2. Making the Buttercream Frosting

  1. Cream the softened butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing well after each addition.
  2. Add vanilla extract and heavy cream, continuing to mix until you achieve a light and fluffy frosting. Adjust sweetness by adding more powdered sugar if needed.
  3. Divide frosting into smaller bowls and tint each with food coloring to match the Hogwarts house colors (red, yellow, green, blue).

3. Assembling the Cake

  1. Stack the cake layers, spreading a thin layer of frosting between each.
  2. Apply a crumb coat to seal in any loose crumbs, then smooth the entire cake with a final coat of frosting.
  3. Add a shimmering effect with edible gold dust or sprinkles to give the cake a magical touch.

4. Decorating the Cake

  1. Use fondant cutouts, themed decorations, or chocolate ganache drips to create Harry Potter-inspired designs like a lightning bolt, wand, or house symbols.

Notes

  • For a cleaner look, use a turntable and offset spatula to frost the cake smoothly.
  • Storage: The cake can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. You can also freeze the cake layers for up to 1 month.
