Ingredients
Scale
For the Dough:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 cup whole milk (warmed)
- 3 large eggs (plus 1 egg for egg wash)
- ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For Decoration:
- 3–4 dyed eggs (raw or hard-boiled)
- Colored sprinkles or pearl sugar
Instructions
1. Preparing the Dough
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk with a teaspoon of sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, and salt.
- Add the eggs, vanilla extract, and softened butter. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.
2. Shaping the Bread
- Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal portions. Roll each portion into a 16-inch rope.
- Braid the ropes together, tucking the ends under. If using dyed eggs, gently nestle them into the braid.
- Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet and cover loosely with a kitchen towel. Let rise for 30–45 minutes.
3. Proofing and Decorating
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Brush the dough with beaten egg and sprinkle with colored sprinkles or pearl sugar for a festive touch.
4. Baking the Bread
- Bake for 25–30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let cool before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature!
