Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
- 4 slices of cheese (American or your choice)
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 4 slices of rye or Texas toast bread
- Butter for toasting
Instructions
- Start by toasting your bread while searing your beef patties. Form the ground beef into two equal patties, seasoning them with salt and pepper. Heat a skillet over medium heat, add the patties, and cook until crispy and browned on one side.
- In the same skillet, add sliced onions and a little butter, cooking them slowly until caramelized. Layer the caramelized onions onto your beef patties and place cheese on top, allowing it to melt as the patties finish cooking.
- Place one slice of toasted bread in the skillet, followed by your beef patty with cheese and onions. Top with another slice of toasted bread, and gently press down to meld all the flavors together.
- Carefully flip the patty melt, grilling it until golden brown on both sides and the cheese is perfectly melted. Once ready, remove from the skillet, slice it in half, and get ready to indulge!
Notes
- Your homemade Whataburger patty melt can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. However, it’s best enjoyed fresh out of the skillet for maximum flavor and texture.
- If you have leftovers, reheat on a skillet to maintain that crispy exterior!
- For the full Whataburger experience, pair your patty melt with crispy fries, onion rings, or a refreshing side salad.
